Hong Kong Art Month Series: George Condo’s First Solo Exhibition in Hong Kong

For art lovers in Hong Kong, March is an exciting month packed with a series of art events, from major art fairs, gallery openings to new exhibitions. If you are looking for an ultimate guide for places and exhibitions you can’t miss, please stay tuned because the Value will introduce you to some of the hottest and latest events in town in our coming articles.

Coinciding with the sixth edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, George Condo’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Expanded Portrait Compositions, presents eight paintings on canvas and five works on paper that display the artist’s unique method of integrating myriad techniques of drawing and painting into singular artworks.

Co-curated by Skarstedt and Sprüth Magers, the exhibition will be on view for two weeks from 27 March to 6 April 2018, with works which have been created by Condo specifically for the Maritime Museum in Hong Kong.

Condo’s recent portraits of single and multiple figures present a bold view of humanity in a state of psychological cubism, reconfigured faces and abstracted bodies which exploded out of the picture frame in a chaotic charge of manic energy. Condo’s bold gestural lines of oil pigment stick, acrylic and metallic paint and pastel create a tour-de force of painting, an expression that raucously shifts between abstraction and figuration all at once in bold and surprising new ways.

If you can't get enough of George Condo, make sure you drop by Sotheby's Hong Kong, where its gallery is now feauturing an exhibition of Condo and Picasso's portraits. The exhibition, Face-Off: Picasso / Condo Exhibitionhighlights the similarities and differences of works by Condo and Picasso. The show is now on public view until the end of March.
