Second Round of Preview: Sotheby’s New York Selection for Autumn Auction

Following Christie’s announcement about its autumn offerings, Sotheby’s New York has also revealed twelve pieces of highlights for the autumn auction. We introduced five of them in our previous article and we are going to introduce the remaining seven pieces, including a Huanghuali furniture, an archaic jade and a green-glazed pottery ewer of Tang dynasty etc.

A spinach-green jade ‘Daoist’ table screen and a ‘Huanghuali’ corner-leg low table, from Qing dynasty in the 18th century, are both estimated at US$200,000 – 300,000. The former one carved the philosopher Laozi riding a water buffalo toward the frontier official Yin Xi while the latter one is an exquisite piece of table in both square and half-table formats, which is usually placed in the center of a study.

A blue and white ‘fruits’ meiping of the Yongle period in Ming dynasty is estimated at US$150,000 – 200,000. By using blue glaze in different depths, the vase depicts six fruits in thin and thick sprays to create an effect of multiple layers of the pattern.

Another piece that also carries an estimate of US$150,000 – 200,000 is Chen Peiqu’s Flowers and Birds After Song Dynasty Masters. In early 20th century, most Chinese artists were influenced by Western art, not many artists would pick traditional Chinese art. It is even rarer to have an artist like Chen that chose to imitate art from Five Dynasties and Song dynasty.

The next one is a green-glazed phoenix-head pottery ewer of Tang dynasty, a sancai ewer from an important Japanese collection, estimated at US$80,000 – 120,000. For archaic jades, a large jade notched disc (Xuanji) from late Neolithic period in Shang dynasty is estimated at US$60,000 to 80,000. Notched discs were used as an astronomical instrument in ancient period.

The last highlighted item is Shen Zongjing (1669-1735) ’s Waterfall in the Pine Forest, estimated at US$25,000 - 45,000. Sheng was a jinshi scholar of Kangxi period and most acclaimed for his ink paintings.
