Sotheby's Hong Kong | Song Ceramics | Auction Summary

The "Song Ceramics from Distinguished Private Collector" sale ended on 5 April. The top lot, a dingyao bottle vase was realized at almost HK$20 million, 2.5 times of its low estimate. Covered with a creamy white glaze, the ceramic body presents carvings of the peony. It originally belonged to Sir Alan and Lady Barrow, and a comparable item is now secured in the collection of the Beijing  Palace Museum.

The second expensive lot of the sale is a Junyao octagonal Buddhist ritual vessel. Behind each side of the vessel, a mini Buddha is hidden with his robe opened showing the belly. The third expensive lot, a puzzle cup from the Yuan dynasty, is also skillfully made. A small human figure will reveal itself at the centre of the cup when water comes in the cup. Both these two interesting works were previously collected by the prominent art dealter, Robert Hatfield Ellsworth.
