Original Work of Old Master Q to Be Offered at Sotheby's Exhibition in Hong Kong

If you are a big fan of Old Master Q, here is a good chance to get your hands on the original works of this enduring icon which encapsulates the collective memory of Hong Kong and the Chinese-speaking world. A selling exhibition entitled Old Master Q 2.0 will take place in Hong Kong this August, showcasing some early colour covers, comic strips and acrylic paintings from the father-and-son duo.

Joseph Wong, Implication-05

Old Master Q returns to Sotheby’s this summer following their successful exhibition in 2014, the largest Old Master Q selling exhibition worldwide. That exhibition was a huge success with unprecedented attendance and all works on offer sold on the first day.

This time, Old Master Q 2.0 will exhibit original works by Mr. Alphonso Wong (who was famous by his pen name, Wong Chak) and his son Professor Joseph Wong. The exhibition will take place at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sl2 Gallery throughout 10-25 August, and will be the final public selling exhibition of the late artist.

The star lot of the exhibition is the oldest existing draft of an Old Master Q comic cover — Rock’n Roll, one of the rarest works available. The artwork will be offered through an online-only auction for public participation from 1 to 17 August.

Alphonso Wong was the first generation artist of Old Master Q. In the early 1960s, Alphonso began the Old Master Q comic series using his eldest son Joseph Wong’s Chinese name, Wong Chak, as his pen name. Featuring a series of colourful characters including Old Master Q, Big Potato, Mr Chin, Mr Chiu and Ms Chan, the comic series instantly attracted a loyal following with its witty humour and succinct text, and enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame.

Joseph Wong, son of Alphonso Wong, is the second generation artist of Old Master Q

Professor Joseph Wong expresses, ‘While it has now been over a year since my father’s passing, Old Master Q maintains a strong hold over the hearts of its readers.  To meet the strong collecting demand of Old Master Q artworks, I am thrilled to be working once again with our long-time partner, Sotheby’s, in presenting my late father’s final selling exhibition. I will also be offering my prized Old Master Q - Rock’n Roll original artwork, which is the cover of the second issue and the earliest original cover artwork extant, since the cover of the first issue is now irrecoverable.  It is my honour to also bring to the exhibition my acrylic paintings series — The Implications, to commemorate the great achievements of my father.”
