George Michael’s Art Collection Goes Under the Hammer at Christie’s

The personal art collection of George Michael is going up for auction at Christie’s this March. Over 200 works including works by Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst will be offered across a live auction and an online sale with proceeds used to continue the singer's philanthropic work.

George Michael

George Michael died on 25 December 2016 at the age of 53. He developed friendship with his contemporaries in the visual arts, such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Michael Craig-Martin, and Marc Quinn, who together created the Young British Art (YBA) movement.

Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst, The Incomplete Truth, 2006. Estimate: £1,000,000 - 1,500,000

One of the highlights is Damien Hirst’s The Incomplete Truth, a dove hovering in formaldehyde, estimated at £1m - 1.5m. The dove symbolising the Holy Spirit and peace is intended to demonstrate that Truth cannot be found in absolutes but, rather, in dualities and the tension between them.

Tracey Emin

Tracey Emin, Drunk to the Bottom of My Soul, 2002. Estimate: £180,000 - 250,000

Tracey Emin’s Drunk to the Bottom of My Soul (2002) is another standout — a large-scale example of the artist’s celebrated appliquéd blankets, which transform traditional textile-based media into vehicles for raw, confessional poetry. It is estimated at £180,000 - 250,000.

Bridget Riley, Songbird, 1982. Estimate: £400,000 - 600,000

Bridget Riley’s Songbird from 1982 was among George Michael’s favourite works and hung above the fireplace in one of the homes owned by the artist.

Michael Craig-Martin, Commissioned Portrait (George), 2007. Estimate: £60,000 - 80,000

It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors, art lovers and legions of fans to acquire works from the legendary recording artist’s private collection. There is an online sale from 8 - 15 March offering works from George Michael collection at more accessible prices. Don't forget to check them out!
