Four letters - L, O, V, E - stacked up in two rows scat in iconic landmarks around the globe, such as Taipei 101, Shinjuku I-Land in Japan, and 6th Avenue in New York City. One of these iconic LOVE sculptures, created by the legendary American artist Robert Indiana, is now available for public viewing in Hong Kong in a new exhibition LOVE Long: Robert Indiana & Asia, presented by Asia Society Hong Kong Center.

Born in 1928, Indiana first became an American art world sensation in 1966 with his LOVE sculpture. In his artistic journey spanning over six decades, Indiana has developed the unique skill to reconfigure words into visual forms imbued with whimsy and poetry. In his artistic exploration of words and languages, the artist also delved into the pictographic and emotional complexity of the Chinese characters love and peace.

Also on display are works by eight artists and collectives from Asia that echo Indiana’s explorations into words and images. Apart from the works of Kutluğ Ataman, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Chim↑Pom, He An, Takuji Kogo (*Candy Factory), and Xu Bing, there are also two newly commissioned pieces created by Hong Kong artist Hung Keung and Taiwanese artist Charwei Tsai.

Threading through these multilingual, multicultural works is a sustained investigation of language. These artists share poetic sensibilities with Indiana, creating work that examines the nuances between words and images. LOVE Long affirms that art is a universal language built upon the fundamental human desire to express and communicate.
