David Zwirner Opens First Asian Outpost in H Queen's Hong Kong

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of his gallery, David Zwirner, Cologne-born art dealer, is confident and optimistic about the prospect of his business. Started in a relatively small space at 43 Greene Street in SoHo New York, David Zwirner Gallery has extended its reach from Greene Street to Chelsea in New York, to London, the Upper East Side, recently to Hong Kong. Yet the art dealer's ambition does not stop here. Earlier this month, he announced another expansion in Chelsea, Zwirner's fourth gallery in New York City and seventh in the world.

Regarded as one of the most important figures in contemporary art, Zwirner has consistently ranked in the top 5 of the ArtReview annual "Power 100" list.

Having observed the strong interest and eagerness to learn from collectors and art lovers in Asia over the past five years, Zwirner realized it would be a good opportunity to open up a new gallery in the region. After thorough consideration, he decided to set up his first Asian outpost in Hong Kong, a metropolitan city that shares many similarities with New York.

Zwirner's new gallery is situated on the 5-6th floor of H Queen's, a new building designed to be at the center of Hong Kong’s art and lifestyle. David Zwirner will be joined by other international galleries such as Hauser & Wirth, Pace and Whitestone, which will also move into the building soon.

Belgian artist Michaël Borremans

To inaugurate the gallery's new space in Hong Kong, David Zwirner presents an exhibition titled Fire from the Sun with new paintings by Michaël Borremans. It is the Belgian artist's first solo show in Hong Kong.

Fire from the Sun includes small and large-scale works that feature naked toddlers, covered in blood, playing with fire or dismembered human body parts on a studio background. The toddlers appear as allegories of the human condition, their archetypal innocence contrasted with their suggested deviousness. Borremans combines technical mastery with subject matter that defies straightforward interpretation.
