At the "battle" of Impressionist & Modern Art sales in London this year, Christie's was greatly "defeated" by Sotheby's, as the former's sale total is £58m less than the latter. At New York Asian Art Week sales, Christie's struck back, achieving over US$330m, the highest total ever for an auction series.
Among the 7 sales in total, "Fujita" sale fetched over US$260m, surpassed the previous record for any Asian Art Week series in auction history. The top lot of this sale and the entire sales series, "Chen Rong as catalogues in Shiqu Baoji, Six Dragons", was sold for nearly US$49m, setting an auction record for a Chinese painting sold outside of Asia. The second top lot of the "Fujita" sale, a bronze fangzun of the late Shang dynasty fetched US$37m, is now the new world record for an archaic bronze.
The "Himalayan" sale also set new record, as its top lot, large black stone figure of Lokanatha Avalokiteshvara fetched US$24.6m, breaking the world auction record for any Indian work of art and any South or Souteast Asian work of art. The selling rate of the entire sale series reaches 88%, which is quite rewarding.
