Christie’s New York | Asian Art Week in March: Highlights and Schedule

This March, Asia Week New York will be held across major international auction houses.

Christie’s will have seven sales of fine arts – five live auctions and two online auctions. Artworks such as ceramics, Buddhist sculptures, paintings and Japanese and Korean Art are included.

Key highlights include a 11th to 12th century Chinese gilt bronze figure of Guanyin sculpture, a 15th century Tibetan gilt bronze Maitreya Bodhisattva sculpture and Indian abstract painter, Vasudeo Gaitonde’s painting from the late 20th century.

Here is an overview of the sales, together with the highlight lots:

Japanese and Korean Art Including the Collection of David and Nayda Utterberg

This is a traditional sale during Asia Week in New York, often led by Japanese woodblock (ukiyo-e) prints. During this season's sale, 20 East Asian Buddhist paintings from the David and Nayda Utterberg Collection will be sold.

David was born in Chicago. After graduating from university, he worked in Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. During this period, he developed a strong interest in Asian Art and became an avid collector.

In 1981, and after returning to San Francisco, David founded a company to run a medical technology and equipment business. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum.

Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art

Another traditional sale during Asia Week in New York, highlights include a 12th century Indian bronze sculpture of Krishna; and a 15th century Tibetan gilt bronze sculpture of Maitreya Bodhisattva.
