‘The Pavilion Sale: Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art’ will be held on 4 April offering 240 lots in total, of which none of the estimated prices exceeds a million. With accessible price points, the sale gives great opportunities for emerging collectors to expand their art collections.
Estimated for HK$700,000, one of the top lots is a Jian ‘oil spot’ bowl with a flaring mouth. It is elegantly shaped, and graced by a myriad of iridescent spots on the interior. Last September, Christie’s New York realized another bowl of this type of Jian wares at US$11,701,000. The two works may not be comparable given their differences in features and provenances; but the former, with such an affordable price, would be a relatively easy choice for both new and experienced buyers.
The 'oil spot' Jian tea bowl sold on 15 September 2016 by Christie's New York (lot no.: 707). The diameter is 12.2 cm.
The sale also offers a ‘mythical animals and grapes’ bronze mirror, which shares the same estimation with the above bowl. The second most expensive lot of the sale is a set of furniture from Qing dynasty. 8 hongmu armchairs and 4 zhazhenmu stands in the set have been split into two lots for auction.
