Zao Wou-Ki 10.1.68 to Lead Sotheby’s Brushwork III – Abstract Masters

Sotheby’s is going to present Brushwork III – Abstract Masters, the third iteration of the auction house's curated Brushwork auction series. Lead by Zao Wou-Ki’s 10.1.68 (estimate upon request), the sale examines the legacy of abstraction from the watershed year of 1945 right up to the present day. The sale features 43 lots of great works by abstract masters from China, Japan, Korean and western countries, as well as other rising talents in the field.

Zao Wou-Ki. 10.1.68. Estimate upon request

Zao Wou-Ki

10.1.68 is a masterpiece exhibiting one of the most strikingly hued palettes ever employed by Zao Wou-Ki. Zao Wou-Ki's artistic career reached a new pinnacle in the 1960s. During the late 1950s, he decided to reject his previous artistic achievements by forsaking realistic representation. Zao Wou-Ki's blue in 10.1.68 reverberates with a transcendent aura, especially when juxtaposed against consummate structural and tonal modulations of orange and umber.

Chu Teh-Chun. No. 144. Estimate: HK$10,000,000 - 15,000,000

Yu Youhan. Pink Composition. Estimate: HK$8,000,000 - 12,000,000

Wu Dayu. Untitled. Estimate: HK$8,000,000 - 12,000,000

Other highlights of the sale include Chu Teh-Chun’s No. 144, Yu Youhan’s Pink Composition, and Wu Dayu’s Untitled, estimated in the region between HK$8m-15m. Besides these Chinese abstract masters, the sale also offers works by Japanese artists like Morita Shiryu and Shiraga Kazuo, as well as Korean artist Park Seobo.

The first two instalments of Brushwork in 2016 and 2017 achieved phenomenal success by selling all lots offered. This year, the sale offers an expanded selection with approximately 40 lots that worth in excess of HK$130m (US$16.7m). Let’s see if Sotheby’s going to deliver another white-glove sale this year.

Park Seobo. Ecriture No.71-74. Estimate: HK$7,000,000 - 9,000,000

Morita Shiryu. Ryū Wa Ryū O Shiru — Dragon Knows Dragon. Estimate: HK$1,500,000 - 2,500,000

Shiraga Kazuo. Goshoku Zanmai. Estimate: HK$600,000 - 800,000
