Bonhams London is going to hold its Asian Art sale on 6 - 7 November. Here is a preview of the top lots of the sale.
The leading lot is a Spinach Green Jade 'Bats and Peony' Washer with a diameter of 18.2cm, from the Qianlong period. Estimated at £8,000 - 12,000, the washer features the interior worked in relief with two bats amongst leafy, flowering peony stems, the stone of rich spinach hue with natural mottling and flecks.
The second lot is a Large Pair of Canton Famille Rose Vases dated mid-19th century, each of the height of 88cm. Estimated at £6,000 - 8,000, this pair of vases dated mid-19th century (corresponding to Qing dynasty). The vases brightly enamelled with cartouches enclosing narrative scenes with warriors and court scenes, all reserved on a white ground with birds, butterflies and peony flowers, the waisted necks flanked with stylised dragon handles.
Canton or Cantonese porcelain is the characteristic style of ceramic ware decorated in Guangzhou. It was one of the major forms of export ware produced in China in the 18th and 20th centuries. Typically, the export ware was made, glazed, and fired at Jingdezhen but decorated with enamels in Guangzhou. Canton Famille rose in the 19th century was typically decorated with alternate panels of figures and birds, flowers and insects, predominantly in pink and green.
There are four other lots that also carry an estimate of £6,000 - 8,000 each. The first one is a 77-cm massive cloisonné enamel tripod incense burner from Late Qing Dynasty.
The second one is a pair of 'arhat' thangkas from 18th-century Tibet. The first depicts Kasnaka seated above Kalika and Vajriputra, and the second depicts Kanakavatsa, Vanavsin, Panthaka and Cudapanthka.
The third one is a set of four paintings titled Canton School (19th century), featuring punishment scenes, tea production, birds and Flowers, and processions gouache on pith paper.
The last one is a Green Jade ‘Dragon and Chilong” Libation Cup from 17th/18th century. The tall narrow vessel carved with three chilong clambering at the mouth rim and a winged dragon at the base.
