Banksy’s half-shredded artwork Love Is in the Bin goes on public display for the first time in Museum Frieder Burda, Germany, for four weeks from 5 February to 3 March 2019.
The original work Girl with Balloon
The moment when the painting passed through a hidden shredder
The original artwork, Girl with Balloon, mysteriously shredded itself moments after it was hammered down at £860,000 at Sotheby’s auction in London last October. It left everyone in the saleroom in shock and grabbed headlines around the globe. The piece was later renamed Love is in the Bin and became the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction.
Banksy uploaded a video detailing how he installed a shredded into the frame
The street artist admitted responsibility for the artwork’s self-destructing stunt via a video detailing how he secretly built a shredder in the frame a few years ago.

The buyer, a female European collector, decided to proceed with the purchase at the same price £1.04m (with buyer's premium included) and loaned the piece to the Museum Frieder Burda to go on display for a month. The half-shredded painting is now expected to be worth at least 50% higher, possibly as high as being worth £2m or even more.

The exhibition attempts to make the context and intentions of Banksy’s work plausible – and to question conditions in an art market that makes such a development, and such an explosion of value possible in the first place.
