Jeff Koons, the King of Pop Art, Is Coming to Art Basel Hong Kong

Art Basel Hong Kong is one of the most highly-anticipated international art events which take place annually in the region, serving as a premier platform for renowned and emerging artists showcasing their cutting-edge works. This year, the excitement continues as prominent artists are coming to Hong Kong to join other art enthusiasts. Don’t forget to save the date, especially if you are a fan of Jeff Koons, because the King of Pop Art will be presented at the fair.

Jeff Koons is an American artist best known for his bold paintings and monumental sculptures that hold a mirror up to contemporary culture. One of his most iconic series is balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces. In 2013, Koons’ Balloon Dog (Orange) sold at an auction in New York for US$58.4m, causing a sensation in the art world.

In fact, he has made his name at auctions way earlier when his 9-feet-tall Hanging Heart (Magenta/Gold) weighing 3,500 pounds was sold for US$23.56m in New York, setting the then auction record for the most expensive piece by a living artist.

Jeff Koons’ name is no stranger even to the fashion industry. In collaboration with Louis Vuitton, he launched a collection of bags, which each features an iconic work from a classic artist like Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet etc.

Bluebird Planter

Jeff Koons is coming to Art Basel Hong Kong with David Zwirner Gallery, presenting five of his recent works at the booth, including Swan and Bluebird Planter from the Balloon series, alongside paintings from his Gazing Ball series.

In 2013, Jeff Koons created the Gazing Ball series, in which he placed a blue sphere on repainted masterpieces. Through reflection in the perfectly shiny surface, the artworks connect viewers with some of the greatest works in history.
