Classic 1956 Porsche Super Speedster to Fetch US$500,000 at RM Sotheby’s

A 1956 Porsche 356 A 1600 S Speedster will be offered for the first time in 50 years at RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th Anniversary Auction on October 27. It is expected to fetch between US$500,000 and US$600,000.

This highly original, fully numbers-matching 1956 Porsche 356 A 1600 S Speedster, commonly referred to as a Super Speedster, is one of just 645 Super Speedsters for the 1956 model year. The Speedster iteration of the 356 was introduced to the U.S. market in 1954 to compete with its affordable British contemporaries.

The Speedster features a low, wrap-around windscreen, an entirely retractable hood, lower door waistline, horizontal trim strip and twin bucket seats. The 356 A Speedster was equipped with the 1.6-liter, 60 bhp air-cooled engine, and in this rare ‘Super’ configuration, boasts an improved 75 bhp output.

In 1967, Robert Howry Jr, a fifth-generation meat-cutter in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, bought this Glacier White 1956 Porsch Super Speedster from a local scrap metal dealer. Since then, he has kept it for the next 51 years. The Speedster spent most of that time carefully stored in a special garage space, coming out occasionally for special events.

This true ‘time capsule’ will come to the Atlanta sale this October, showing just 35,302 actual miles and complete with Porsche Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity. It is supplied with its original side curtains, tool roll, jack, and spare, along with its pull-through leather key fob, manuals, and many other unique original parts.
